XO Reckless Interview
Sovereign Savant:So what started your music career?
XO Reckless:I started playing guitar when I was 14. Started a punk band in Orange County 2 years later. Then naturally learned bass guitar for another band a year or so later did two punk bands for a while. Then joined my little brothers pop punk band a year after that. Played guitar or bass in a few metal, punk, and hardcore bands between then and giving singing a shot in my early twenties. Moved to Boise in early 2006. Joined another punk band upon moving to Boise. Did that for about 8 years. During that point started playing on FL studios making beats and learning how to rap. Gave that a shot a couple different times to pretty underwhelming results. So in addition to the start of it, its kind of been an evolution of different styles over the years. Xo Reckless started in late Dec 2020.
Would you like the story behind that?
Sovereign:Bro the floor is yours!
XO:Long story short. Things started spiraling downward for me in mid 2020. It seemed like it was something new every week. Was singing in a melodic type rock/punk/ hard-core type band. The relationship i was in at the time gad gone toxic. So I started really reaching deep lyrically and started even Incorporating a little of the hip hop styles that I had dabbled in a few years prior. The band ended up disbanding but I had shown one of my rapper friends in Southern ca a track where I dropped a few bars in the intro, and ultimately he invited me to join his crew/group. To be honest what they were doing was kind of cool, but wasn't really the perfect fit for me. But I had to think of a name that I was going to go by. So I was a big fan emo. So I decided on the XO for hugs and kisses. The Reckless and from everything I've been dealing with and it seemed like I was making one bad decision unintentionally after another and that just felt Reckless to me. Not to mention I can extremely self-destructive and Reckless when I get to that mental state so it just fit. I ended up having a pretty bad breakdown in December of 2020. Checked myself into a facility for a little while oh, and that's where I kind of decided I was going to fuse the two styles together with the melodic singing, screaming at times, and then spitting hard, & or emotional bars. Then I realized that style fusions like that had kind of been going on for a little while. And it just clicked . Thats my comfort zone. So I started experimenting with it in January of 2021
Sovereign:Well where do you hope to take your experiments?
XO:As far as I can. Its a little more deliberate at this point tbh
Sovereign:Where do you hope to be in the next 10 years?
XO:Shit. Alive. Lol. For real though. I hope to be successful with what I'm doing. Performing on big stages, and doing it like I know I'm capable of. Bringing the dream to life in the sense of the big picture I have in my head.
Sovereign:Whats the vision?
XO:To reach as many people that might feel what I have to say and what I'm doing.
Sovereign:Alright that makes sense. Who would you like to work with in the future?
XO:Oh. Lost of people tbh. Off the top of my head. The Game, Ouija Macc, Bg Knoccout, Fat Nick, Melissa Marie from the Millionaires, Polo G, Spice 1, Yellawolf, Fronz from Attila, Ronnie Radke, Dj Quikk, Trace Cyrus, Chef Keef, drake, Future, Lil Durk, just to name a few off the top of my head.
Sovereign:Would you want to work with singles or albums?
XO:As far as a preference on what I'd like to release? Honestly both.
Sovereign:So what do you hope to leave the music industry with?
XO:A sense of accomplishment. Some money in the bank and financial security wouldn't hurt. Not banking on that though.
Sovereign:Alright that's what's up! So are their any events planned to perform anytime soon?
XO:Not at this time. I need to handle a medical thing, but I have been trying to get an opening slot on a bigger show for Nov. I'll keep you posted if that comes through.
Sovereign:Ayyy! So where do you hope to perform in future years such as cities or states?
XO:Oh all over. Africa's on my radar. Been working on some stuff with artists from that region for a little while now. Europe of course, Australia, India. All over the US.
Sovereign:Is their anything coming out with the africa region anytime soon?
XO:Yeah. Just finished tracking my verse for a remix of a track called Mobile Money Girl, by an artist called Bany, fka Banini. Actually about to send him my vocal stems here shortly.
Sovereign:Ayy that's killer! I know you covered most of your story upfront is their anything you'd like to add before closing out?
XO:I'd like to leave it at life can be absolute shit at times. It's can seem like everything just keeps going wrong. Try and find positive in that and keep your head up. Thats a lot easier said than done, in my experience. Don't give up on yourself or your dreams. No matter how bad it gets.
